ART WITH HEART:

ARTISTS FOR ANIMALS!

The first Artists for Animals auction took place

on Saturday 13th Feb at EPSAC community gallery in Bird St,

under the capable hammer and good-natured repartee of Mike Bosch,

to whom we are thoroughly indebted.

Linda-Louise Swain, ably assisted by Sharon Rother, and various kind donors,
put on a fabulous table of eats and drinks, and before the auction even got under way,
a party was being had by all!  Poor Basil Brady was commandeered the minute he walked in the door, to assist Lez with completing the cataloguing, and as if that wasn't enough, given a camera and told to 'shoot' - so the pics on this page were all taken by Basil, and a big THANK YOU to him, as well as to Tom Bateman for volunteering to take over as the 'holder-upper' so that Lez could write down the names of the successful bidders.

Thanks to the incredible GENEROSITY OF OUR ARTIST COMMUNITY
there were over 60 works available to be auctioned. In the final tally, R15 000 was raised for the Animal Anti_Cruelty League.  The art-loving public had a ball - prices were low and people had the opportunity to purchase original works of art at crazy prices.  The artists took this in good spirit, that they had given something they made with love, to a good cause. A few artists just bought their own works back - really a donation, and we are most appreciative.

THANK YOU to La Femme and Weekend Post for their support, and to EPSAC for not only donating the use of their premises, but also accepting work and storing unsold work for collection by the artists.

Auction

To the Art Community and all those Artists who so generously donated to the Art with Heart Auction

Our grateful thanks.  You have raised R15 000 for those who cannot speak for themselves.  Your generosity of soul in reaching out to these creatures is greatly appreciated.

This money will be used to provide treatment and food at our mobile Clinics which go daily into the Northern Areas, where we find some of the worst cases of neglect.

Without the generous support of the public and communities such as yourselves, we would be unable to continue with this vital work.  Thank you.

Our sincere regards and thanks

Wet Firing & Obvaru Firing Workshop

 Sat 29 May - 9am

@ Mogg's Pottery

39 Smartt Road, Nahoon

These are 2 firing tecniques introduced to me by Irish ceramic artist Jane Jermyn at her workshop in Port Elizabeth. With her blessing in the spirit that potters share, we are holding a ceramic workshop for these firings.  Jane Jermyn, www.janejermynceramics.com makes beautifully judged organic sculptural forms using her wet firing technique.  The creations are put together using oxides, slip, basketry, thin pre-fired porcelain forms, organic matter and various clays, fired in a gas kiln sopping wet.  Its a fast firing from the beginning to over 1 100 deg C, rendering beautiful colour, tone and texture in these sculptural forms.

Jane says that the elemental nature of clay excite her as do geological formations, strata and textures.  She sees her work as a celebration of nature, through the transformation of clay by fire.

Participants will make their own sculptures as described above and they will be fired at the workshop. A demo will be done to give participants an idea of what its all about.

Jane has traveled extensively over the world demonstrating this technique and in so doing learnt other techniques including Obvaru firing, which involves dipping pre heated bisque ware into a batter recipe rendering beautifully mottled and organic results.

ABOUT RIEBEEK EAST: The Dutch Reformed Church established the village of Riebeek East in 1830 on the farm Mooimeisiesfontein, the home of Voortrekker leader Piet Retief. The need for a church in the area had become apparent, with farmers having being forced to travel 130 km to Uitenhage for Nagmaal. The British initially denied this request in 1826, but in 1830, a second request was granted, and so in the age-old SA tradition, a town grew up around a church. The town is now surrounded by game and sheep farms, and offers interesting scenic walks through the surrounding hills and valleys. The original farm house of Piet Retief still stands and has been declared a National Heritage site.
